'Fumbling In The Dark' bonus level

Get the key from the Cortex Bonus Round in Jaws Of Darkness to unlock the 'Fumbling In The Dark' bonus level.

'Whole Hog' bonus level

Get the key from the Cortex Bonus Round in Sunset Vista to unlock the 'Whole Hog' bonus level.

Alternate ending

Jump across the Great Hall once you have all of the gems to view an alternate ending.

Colored gems

Get a 'Perfect' rating on the indicated level to unlock a special colored gem. To get a 'Perfect' rating, successfully complete a level with all crates smashed and no lives lost. Levels not listed below give you normal clear gems.

Blue Gem: Perfect on Toxic Waste
Green Gem: Perfect on The Lost City
Orange Gem: Perfect on Generator Room
Purple Gem: Perfect on Lights Out
Red Gem: Perfect on Slippery Climb
Yellow Gem: Perfect on The Lab
Infinite lives

First, unlock the Green gem by destroying all boxes without dying in 'The Lost City' level. You are allowed to die in the two bonus levels of The Lost City. With the Green gem, go to the 'Castle Machinery' level. It is on Island 3, at the end of the game. Jump on the Green gem platform at the start of the level to get 29 lives. Pause the game, select 'Quit', then reload the auto save to make all 29 lives respawn. Load the 'Castle Machinery' level again, jump on the green platform to get another 29 lives, quit out, reload auto save, and repeat as many times as desired. This is by far the quickest way to get 99 lives (takes approximately three minutes), but it requires a lot of game progress.

To farm lives early in the game, go to 'The Lost City' level, near the start of Island 2. You can find bats spawning infinitely. Stand in their spawn and press X + Square to kill them repeatedly. They respawn after a few seconds and always drop fruit. Every 100 pieces of fruit give one life. You earn roughly 10 lives every 6 minutes. It is a slower method but a good way to get lives early in the game.

Using the auto save reload makes the lives respawn in all levels. Use this trick to farm lives in the first level. Keep collecting the lives and fruit in any level, quit, and reload the auto save.

Easy masks

Repeat the first level to easily find masks.

Clearing obstacles

On levels such as 'Road To Nowhere', you can jump onto the ropes on the side and easily clear most of the obstacles. To keep from falling off the rope, you need to jump forward repeatedly on the rope.

Defeating Papu Papu

When you arrive, Papu Papu will be sleeping. You will have two Aku Akus. He will spin his club. When this happens, go on his seat to dodge it. He will then bring the club up to hit you. Dodge that as well. Then, jump on his head. Repeat the above steps twice to defeat Papu Papu.

Crash Bandicoot (PS1) Saving FAQ

CRASH BANDICOOT 2: CORTEX STRIKES BACK EXTRA ITEM GLITCH GUIDE - CRASH BANDICOOT 3: WARPED EXTRA ITEM GLITCH GUIDE

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING FAQ YOU'RE ABOUT TO READ WAS REJECTED FROM GAMEFAQS FOR BEING 'TOO SPECIFIC'. TOO BAD, IT WOULD'VE HELPED PEOPLE HAVING TROUBLE WITH SAVING IN THIS GAME, AS IT IS A BIT OF A TRICKY THING TO DO UNTIL ONE GETS THE GIST OF IT.

4. Gem Save & Key Save
6. About passwords
8. NTSC/J exclusive stuff
10. Some final game technicals

1. Introduction
All righty then. If any of you came here from N. Sane Trilogy, seeking help for that, here's a..
DISCLAIMER: This FAQ is for the original PS1 version. If you're playing that or are just curious to see what the saving is like told you by someone who actually knows what he's talking about, go ahead. I'm the wrong person to ask about the N. Sane Trilogy.
Now, I've seen countless times misinformation about saving floating around. So I decided to do this FAQ. I've played the game a lot and know the saving system pretty much inside out. I know how different stuff works. Now it's incorrect to say only one method saves, as they all save, but they just save different things. That's what I'm here for.

You encounter multiple methods for saving when you run the game. We'll discuss those first.
Bonus Rounds:
Tawna Bonus Round: Collect 3 Tawna tokens and you are transported to a Bonus Round. Finish it and you'll be given a chance to save. Shall you fail, you need to re-enter the level and collect tokens to try again.
Brio Bonus Round: Collect 3 Brio tokens and you are transported to a Bonus Round. These serve no other purpose than to get useless lives. Enough said.
Cortex Bonus Round: Collect 3 Cortex tokens and you are transported to a Bonus Round. Finishing it gives you a key.
You have two options, using a Memory Card or a Password. It doesn't matter at all which method you use, the things we discuss doesn't mind either, same rules apply to both.
But how all this works? Let's discuss the saving method first.
FIRST SAVE: When reaching the first save in the current session, you are given a chance to pick a Memory Card Slot to save in. Or you can see the password.
SECOND SAVE ONWARDS: If you picked a Memory Card Slot, the game always asks you if you want to overwrite it. There's always an option to see the password. If you chose password earlier, or at any point after FIRST SAVE choose to see it, the game pesters you with the Memory Card Slot again.
If you don't have a Memory Card inserted, you are automagically shown the password. In the Japanese version you still see the Memory Card screen, and thus you have to press Triangle.

When you hear a sound at the end of the bonus and/or and the game tells you '?X COMPLETE!' your progress for the current session is saved somewhere. The game remembers your progess. It's up to you if you want to save it to a Memory Card or get the password. If you pick 'NO' when Game Over, your progression is lost if not saved.
During Cortex Bonus Rounds it's possible to skip saving when getting the key. This doesn't matter much, as the next whatever-save you encounter puts your save up to date. In these rare occasions we can see that the game saves all you got due to save at any saving opportunity, but normally the game gives you a save point at a point when there's only one thing to save.
NOTE: If you could somehow drop out of Tawna Bonus Rounds AFTER the SAVE POINT notice, the rule with falling off of Cortex Bonus Round after getting the key would be present here. This is not possible without GameShark however.

Tawna Bonus Rounds give you a chance to save your LEVEL PROGRESS. When you get to the end, the game saves you at various locations:
Jungle Rollers Bonus Round: Starts you at Jungle Rollers
The Great Gate Bonus Round: Starts you at Boulders
Rolling Stones Bonus Round: Starts you at Rolling Stones
Native Fortress Bonus Round: Starts you at Native Fortress
Up The Creek Bonus Round: Starts you at Ripper Roo
The Lost City Bonus Round: Starts you at Temple Ruins
Road To Nowhere Bonus Round: Starts you at Boulder Dash
Sunset Vista Bonus Round: Starts you at Koala Kong
Heavy Machinery Bonus Round: Starts you at Heavy Machinery
Generator Room Bonus Round: Starts you at Generator Room
The High Road Bonus Round: Starts you at Slippery Climb
Jaws of Darkness Bonus Round: Starts you at Castle Machinery

Complete the appropriate Bonus Round and you're good to go later.

This category is here due to the mistakes with people happening here. So.
When you get a gem or a key, the game only saves the fact that you've earned one. That means if you think you get LEVEL PROGRESS saved, it's goodbye to that progress if you quit. Even though you get a chance to save after Key Bonus Rounds, it only saves the fact that you got a key.
NOTE: Bonus Rounds have boxes, but they do not count to the box count. This makes Bonus Rounds all the more optional.
NOTE: When you touch the key at the Bonus Round itself, it counts as KEY GET, and you can skip saving by jumping down to an endless pit. Though when saving at the next whatever-saving point you get, it saves the key along with LEVELS/GEM you get.
NOTE: After getting out of the Key Bonus Round after getting the key, if that's the only thing you came to the level to get, you can just exit, as the key activates its effect immediately.
Even the manuals state this thing:
PAL manual quotes:
'BONUS ROUNDS - A CHANCE TO SAVE CRASH' -Talking about Tawna Bonus Round
If Crash makes it to the end of the Bonus Round then the percentage of the adventure you've completed is displayed. You can then save your progress by making crash jump onto the Sparkling Transport Pad.' -Only talk about saving
NTSC/U manual quotes:
'An in-game Saving System allows you to record data to a memory card at certain SAVE POINTS during the game.' -OK, good quote
'The SAVE POINTS are located in the Tawna Bonus Rounds. At various other points you will be given the opportunity to record the fact that you've earned a gem or key.' -See, even US manual says this
'You can only save on Tawna Rounds.' -This is seen later
You people need to read more manuals, seriously. That way we can avoid FAQ's like this. No offence, but please, read the manual first if having trouble.
Cortex Key Bonuses are in: Sunset Vista & Jaws of Darkness.

1: Tawna Bonus Rounds are completely optional, as getting all gems and keys are enough for 100% completion.
2: Getting 100% automatically opens all levels, but that happens when all the collectibles are obtained, and is the only exception to this rule of no LEVEL PROGRESS saved by gems and keys. But you've done everything at 100% point so that's the logical thing to happen. When this happens all Tawna Bonus Rounds, used or not, go away.
3: Skipping a Tawna Bonus Round and saving at the next one disables the skipped one. (Should be obvious)
4: Getting lots of progress and saving in an early Tawna Bonus doesn't save all that progress, only up to that Bonus Round you use to save. (Should also be obvious)

As long as you reach SAVE POINTs and get keys, all you get is a short 8 characters long password. Any gem get nets you 24 characters long passwords from that point on, known as SUPER PASSWORDs.
NOTE: These SUPER PASSWORDS always start with '[TRIANGLE] [TRIANGLE]'.

You load the game by either selecting LOAD GAME or PASSWORD.
LOAD GAME:
Memory Card screen appears. Select file. You can see the saved stats. You start off a place determined by what's saved and where, according to rules discussed earlier.
PASSWORD:
You enter in a password and if it's incorrect, the game tells you the password is INVALID PASSWORD. If it's correct, you are shown your 'saved' stats. You start off a place determined by what's saved and where, according to rules discussed earlier.
Password menu controls:
D-PAD LEFT: ERASE CHARACTER

8. NTSC/J exclusive stuff
Despite being easier and harder at the same time (play it and you'll eventually get what I mean) there's a handful of differences with NTSC/J.
Japanese version does few things differently. You get only Memory Card saving. Rules discussed all apply, the differences will be discussed here.
FIRST SAVE: You are asked to select a Memory Card Slot. You can skip this, but you lose the save opportunity.
SECOND SAVE ONWARDS: If you selected a Memory Card Slot, you are asked if you want to overwrite it. You can also pick a new slot, or cancel saving. Again, if you do that, you'll lose that save opportunity. If you didn't save earlier, the game pesters you with a Memory Card Slot again.
If you do reach any save point and decide not to save, you lose access to that saving opportunity. Pretty much like the other versions, but you aren't shown a password to compensate.
Also you can't see your progression stats when getting a Game Over and selecting no to 'Continue?'.
Tawna Bonusing:
The game contains a few changes with Tawna Bonus Rounds, everything is the same but these differences here:
- Differences to what level your progress is saved
- Road To Nowhere doesn't have a Tawna Bonus Save Point
- Sunset Vista and Slippery Climb are switched with each other
- Sunset Vista doesn't have a Tawna Bonus Save Point
- Tawna Bonus added to Temple Ruins, Slippery Climb, Cortex Power and Castle Machinery
The Lost City Bonus Round: Starts you at The Lost City
Temple Ruins Bonus Round: Starts you at Road To Nowhere
Slippery Climb Bonus Round: Starts you at Koala Kong
Cortex Power Bonus Round: Starts you at Cortex Power
Castle Machinery Bonus Round: Starts you at Nitrus Brio
WARNING: If you use Jaws Of Darkness SAVE POINT, Castle Machinery SAVE POINT is also unusable, which should not happen. I've been apparently too good at this game.
Gems and stuff:
Some gems are also switched around, so it's possible to use one Gem Save earlier along the way to Dr. Neo Cortex.
Boxes:
Some levels have more or less boxes due to switching things. This doesn't affect gem getting much, other than you can get one gem earlier when compared to PAL and NTSC/U versions.
NOTE ABOUT GETTING GEMS IN THE NTSC/J VERSION: Aku Aku gives a following hint to the player in Upstream: 'If you break all the boxes and reach the goal, you'll get a beautiful diamond. You can't get it if you start from a checkpoint.'. Now, this is true with PAL and NTSC/U versions of the game, but with NTSC/J, as long as you break all the boxes is enough. All boxes will spawn back when you die, and you can break them again for the gem. Sometimes this is impossible or impractical to do though.

Save Points exist in this beta, but there's no way to tell which levels they save in, except by Game Over. Do note that you need to activate the text which says 'SAVE POINT ?% COMPLETE!' otherwise it won't work here.
There's a few level differences after Temple Ruins, up to that point everything is like the final game, exceptions are these:
Sunset Vista Bonus Round: Starts you at Sunset Vista
Jaws of Darkness Bonus Round: Starts you at Koala Kong
