The Sims: Bustin' Out starts out with Malcolm Landgraab going around his neighborhood stealing items in return for unpaid rent. The player's objective is to complete each career track, unlock and buy back everyone's possessions, and become rich enough to evict Malcolm from his mansion and move their own Sim in.

  • Info on the Game Boy Advance link feature. The Korean and Chinese versions might have leftover text relating to the game cabinet as the handheld game never came out in those territories.

Debugging Options

To do:
Finish the information section under Debug Menu.

Several debugging options left hidden in the game that can be brought back.

The PS2 European version had two different releases - the standard European version (SLES-52047) with French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch as the additional languages, and the Nordic version (SLES-52048) that has Danish, Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish alongside English. They are represented with (S) and (N) respectively in the tables below.

Debug Menu

(cheatmenu)

This debug menu is normally visually broken, because the default value that sets the distance between each line is 1.1f, whereas it needs to be a much larger number such as 70f on PS2, Xbox and GCN NTSC, and 80f on GCN PAL in order to render it properly. The debug menu can be opened by pressing SQUARE + TRIANGLE + CIRCLE on PS2 and X + Y + B on GameCube and Xbox, though not all options can be enabled here, such as display_fps because those need to be set to active before the Start screen, whereas this menu can only be brought up after it.

FPS & Performance Statistics

(display_fps)

Displays a whole bunch of information on the screen about the performance of the game. The displayed information displays slightly on each platform, but GameCube displays the most.

Rendering Information

Attempts to list a bunch of rendering information, but the values always remain at 0 (NaN). Just like the debug menu, this display is by default visually broken due to the line spacing being set to 1.1f and needs to be fixed by increasing it to 80f. This is also only present in the GameCube release.

Unused Graphics

Unused NPC Icons

The papergirl or the mail deliverer can't be interacted with, making the icon unseen.

Development Files and Folders

Some files and folders used during development are still present on the disc. These elements give information about early versions of the game.

Debug Options

SystemData/Runtime/ChalData/CHEATS.txt includes some settings, debug options and most likely unavailable options. Two lines (lobby_server = 0 and enable_dnas = 0) indicate either the possibility of an online mode like in the PlayStation 2 version, or just a leftover from said version. Changing the values has no effect on the game.

Developer Notes

Relationship Panel Images

/SystemData/Runtime/Thumbnails/readme.txt explains how to use the thumbnails folder:

ALLCHARACTERS.rsp

The ALLCHARACTERS.rsp file present in /SystemData/Runtime/ contains an early list of settings for all the characters. In this file, 'Mimi', 'Mom', 'Dudley', 'Randy', and 'Max' (present in the final version) don't have personal thumbnails and are linked to the 'placeholder' image used during development. The file includes some physical options that are likely unused in the final version.

Leftover Thumbnails

The Thumbnails folder present in /SystemData/Runtime/ contains a lot of unused images for the relationship panel, which show leftover thumbnails for characters from the various modes in the previous game. This folder indicates the presence of 83 characters, but the final game has only 23 story characters.

  • Named 'placeholder', this is a leftover development thumbnail.

  • Abhi, a character from one of the multiplayer minigames.

  • Ashley, a character from one of the multiplayer minigames.

  • Bubba, a character from one of the multiplayer minigames.

  • Bella Goth from 'Play The Sims' mode.

  • Betty, one of the party-goers featured in 'Get a Life' mode.

  • Brianna, a character from one of the multiplayer minigames.

  • Bingo, one of the party-goers featured in 'Get a Life' mode.

  • Bob Newbie, the tutorial character from the original Sims.

  • Bobo the Bum, an NPC featured in 'Get a Life' mode. /facebook-word-game-cheat.html.

  • Candy, one of the bachelorettes from 'Get a Life'.

  • Carlos, one of the party-goers featured in 'Get a Life' mode.

  • Cassandra Goth from 'Play The Sims' mode.

  • Chantal, an NPC featured in 'Get a Life' mode.

  • Charles, an NPC featured in 'Get a Life' mode.

  • Chris Roomies from 'Play The Sims' mode.

Leftover Dumped File

Download Tuning.txt File
File:The_sims_BustinOut_tuning_txt.7z (19 KB) (info)

A file named Tuning.txt in the /SystemData/Runtime/GameData folder contains a huge list of what effects every object, event, and social interaction can have on Sims and the surrounding environment.

This file also appears to have information about unused/unfinished objects and interactions.

Leftover Batch Files

Four batch files are still present inside the /SystemData/Runtime/ChalData/ folder: export.bat, exportchallenge.bat, exportdefault.bat, and exportstory.bat.

Export.bat

Exportchallenge.bat

Exportdefault.bat

Exportstory.bat

Unused Sounds

STING_POTION_GOOD

An obvious leftover from the previous console entry, when a house is completed fast in Get A Life mode.

STING_POTION_FUNNY

Yet another sound leftover from the previous console entry, and still unused too.

STING_CRYSTALBALL

Even though there's already a crystal ball to be found in-game, it isn't used. It's also another leftover sound, used when an objective is complete. Unlike the last one that is duplicated, each of them have slight differences in sound.

STING_DEATH_FISH

To do:
Is this used?

An remixed version of the dead fish jingle from The Sims 1 that fits in with other sound effects. The original version of that sting is used.

Unused Effects

The final game still has some unused effects from objects or social interactions. All of this information came from Tuning.txt (see above).

Unused Object Effects

The Espresso Machine could originally become dirty at one point. (line 467).

All Lamps use the same methods and appear to have unused functions. Originally, the Bulb London 2012 video game cheats. lamp didn't have the same effect than other lamps.

The Heartbed (The only bed where you can perform the 'WooHoo' interaction) has a lot of unused functions.

Out

Obscured Graphics

NPC Icons

Grim Reaper

While not technically unused, it's unlikely if the player will ever see the icon of the Grim Reaper. Using the 'Plea' action to revive a sim that died would show the image of the Sim rather than the Grim Reaper's mugshot. It can be seen if a death has occurred on the lot and when a Sim uses the Talk interaction with another, with the Grim Reaper's head icon being shown in the speech bubble.

Burglar

The Burglar cannot be interacted with at all on the lot, but the mugshot can be seen if the robbery has occurred and the 'Talk' interaction is used.

Regional Differences

Title Screen

In Japan, this game is simply called The Sims (as the last console game was called SimPeople there), compared to other regions that got a unique translated subtitle.

Create-A-Sim Presets

The adult character presets in Create-A-Sim are different in the Japanese, Korean, and Chinese versions, and look more Asian compared to the regular ones. The children, however, only have a slightly different skin tone. They can be recreated in either version without having to unlock any accessories in Bust Out mode.

Become An Alcoholic

Drinks made with the drink bar refill energy, fun, and food. If you turn your roomies intodrink mixing slaves you’ll never have to sleep, eat, or worry about having fun.

Sleep Is For The Weak

Sims Bustin Out Cheats Gamecube

Instead of sleeping at night, just touch a bugzapper over and over again. Your energy willincrease and your comfort will decrease. You’llbe able to gain energy much faster than if youslept. Be sure to have a comfy chair nearbythough, for the lost comfort.

Rely On Charity

Spend all of your money. When you do, you shouldstart receiving money via telephone calls. Aslong as you keep draining your account back tozero by buying more stuff, the calls will keepcoming. When you’re done, sell everything youbought.

Call A Rich Friend

Create two Sims on two memory cards. Load one, sell everything at Mom’s House, and save. Loadthe other and allow the Sim who sold everythingto join as the second player. Make the rich Simempty his or her steamer trunk of money. Thisshould net you about 50,000 Simoleans. Repeat ifnecessary.

Become A Momma’s Sim

At the beginning of the game, refrain from getting a job. Stay at Mom’s Housebuilding up skills and making friends. Since several motives don’t decay at Mom’s(most notably energy, so you won’t have to sleep) and you don’t have to go towork, you’ll be able to build up skills very quickly. Take time off for personaldevelopment. If you haven’t fulfilled the necessary requirements for a promotion, move back into Mom’s House. Instead of spending an unproductive day at work, you’ll be able to build up your skills and make friends. When you’re ready, moveback into the appropriate lot and nab that promotion.

Extra Money

Mom's house, Mimi's place, or Dudley's trailer, buy things until your budgetdrops below $100. Wait about an hour. When the phone rings, answer it. You willget free money. Repeat this as necessary.
